Sterling Stumbles Amid Budget and BoE Rate Decision Concerns
The pound declined against the dollar after reaching a peak, influenced by investor focus on the upcoming British budget and the Bank of England's interest rate decision. This follows five consecutive days of gains for sterling. The prospect of tax hikes and economic policy uncertainty under the new Labour government are contributing factors.
The pound slipped against the dollar on Wednesday, retreating from a two-and-a-half-year peak reached just a day earlier. Investors are now looking ahead to next month's British budget and an interest rate decision from the Bank of England due eight days later.
Sterling fell 0.30% to $1.33725 after five straight days of gains. Senior forex strategist Jane Foley from Rabobank highlighted the October 30th UK budget as a significant hurdle, with expectations of tax hikes contributing to investor caution.
Economic policy uncertainty under the newly elected Labour government is also a concern, potentially affecting business investment and consumer spending, according to Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee member Megan Greene. Finance Minister Rachel Reeves confirmed that tax increases are likely in the upcoming budget.
