A Taiwan air force advanced jet trainer, the AT-5 Brave Eagle, experienced an engine malfunction leading to a crash on Saturday. The incident, considered a setback for Taiwan's defense program, involved a domestically developed aircraft made by Aerospace Industrial Development Corp.
The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from the Chihhang air base, with both engines reportedly failing. Fortunately, the crew ejected safely and were rescued, as confirmed by Taiwan's air force, which has already launched an investigation into the incident.
This marks the first accident for the AT-5 since deliveries began in 2021. Taiwan plans to acquire 66 units by 2026, aiming to replace older trainers like the AT-3 and F-5. The program underscores Taiwan's commitment to strengthening its defense industry amidst increasing Chinese military activities.
