Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw disclosed on Wednesday that all mainline coaches carrying passengers are now equipped with bio-toilets. This achievement has notably prevented rail corrosion caused by human waste, he informed the Lok Sabha.
In response to queries regarding bio-toilets in trains, Vaishnaw highlighted that the Indian Railways adopted a zero-discharge bio-toilet system to eliminate human waste discharge on railway tracks, enhancing hygiene and cleanliness.
Vaishnaw reported a massive increase in equipped coaches, from 9,587 between 2004-2014 to an impressive 3,33,191 between 2014-2025. This shift was facilitated by an informative campaign during the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' to educate passengers about bio-toilet functionality, preventing non-biodegradable waste clogging. The initiative enhances track cleanliness and ensures safer railway operations.
