India Imposes Steep Duty on Yellow Peas Imports

In a move to protect domestic agriculture, India has announced a 30% import duty on yellow peas starting November 1. This decision comes after farmers expressed concerns over the influx of cheaper imports affecting local pricing.

The government clarified that any shipments with a bill of lading dated on or before October 31, 2025, will not be subject to the new duty. Previously, the country allowed duty-free imports until March 31, 2026, to meet consumer demand.

India is the world's largest importer of yellow peas, primarily sourcing them from Canada and Russia. The imposition of this duty reflects efforts to balance import needs with supporting domestic agriculture.
