The government has intervened to curb soaring air ticket prices following significant disruptions in IndiGo flight operations. On Saturday, the civil aviation ministry announced a temporary cap on airfares ranging from Rs 7,500 to Rs 18,000, with the maximum cap applying to distances over 1,500 kilometers. These caps exclude business class and UDAN flights.
The ministry stated that the price limits, applicable to flights of varying distances, including the popular Delhi-Mumbai sector, aim to stabilize the market amidst operational disruptions. The limits will continue until conditions return to normal. All bookings, whether made through the airline's website or travel agencies, must adhere to these caps.
In light of the IndiGo flight cancellations, passengers have faced numerous challenges, including misplaced baggage. The government has pressed IndiGo to refund tickets for cancelled flights by Sunday evening, ensuring customer rights are protected. The capping is intended as an interim relief, with industry experts calling for robust contingency plans and transparent fare monitoring in the long run.
