India is set to implement barrier-free tolling on national highways by December, aiming to cut logistics costs. India is poised to revolutionize its national highways with the introduction of seamless, barrier-free tolling systems by December. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced this significant development at the Logistics Shakti Summit & Awards 2026, highlighting the government's commitment to reducing logistics costs.

The new tolling system utilizes advanced technologies such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and RFID-based Electronic Toll Collection (FASTag). This innovation allows for automated, non-stop toll payments, potentially reducing logistics costs to single digits, as India aspires to position itself as a global economic power.

Gadkari also stressed the need to decrease reliance on imported fossil fuels and increase production of alternative and biofuels, with a focus on green hydrogen. Such initiatives support India's vision of becoming a USD 5-trillion economy, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitions.
