India's Coffee Boom: Export Surge Signals Industry Evolution
India's coffee exports rose by 26.6% in early 2026, driven by robusta and instant coffee. With increased exports and a record production forecast, India's coffee industry is evolving beyond its robusta supplier role. Rising values and domestic growth could signal an industry inflection point.
Coffee exports from India have surged by 26.6% in the January-April period of 2026, largely due to significant shipments of robusta and instant coffee, according to government data. This marks a rise to 1.74 lakh tonnes, up from 1.37 lakh tonnes in the same period the previous year.
In terms of value, total coffee exports increased to Rs 936.57 crore, compared to Rs 757.07 crore a year ago. Unit value realisation also rose, indicating a robust performance in the international market. Robusta exports saw a remarkable 36% rise, while instant coffee shipments experienced a notable increase.
Experts suggest the Indian coffee sector is on the cusp of transformation, departing from its traditional identity. Record production estimates and rising export values suggest a pivotal moment for the industry. However, weather volatility and climate risks remain challenges as India steps further into the global coffee economy.
