The FAA is allocating $16.5 million to install transponders on airport vehicles after a fatal crash in March at LaGuardia Airport involving an Air Canada Express jet and a fire truck. This initiative aims to enhance surface awareness by equipping 1,900 vehicles across 264 airports with the technology.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on Wednesday a $16.5 million investment to install transponders on its airport vehicles. This decision follows a fatal accident in March at New York's LaGuardia Airport, where an Air Canada Express jet collided with a fire truck.
The involved fire truck lacked a transponder, a device that eases surface movement coordination. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey revealed plans to equip all airfield vehicles with this technology. The FAA will soon begin the process of installing transponders on its fleet, which comprises about 1,900 vehicles in 264 airports.
By implementing this technology, the FAA aims to prevent future accidents and enhance safety measures across airports, ensuring precise vehicle and aircraft movement on runways and taxiways.
