Green lawmakers in the European Parliament have given the green light to support Ursula von der Leyen's bid for a second term as head of the European Commission. Sources within the group confirmed the decision to Reuters.

The 53-member Green lawmaker group made their decision in a closed-door meeting, significantly boosting von der Leyen's chances of securing another five years at the helm of the European Union's most powerful institution.

The vote, which is a secret ballot, is scheduled for 1 p.m. (1100 GMT) in Strasbourg, France. Lawmakers will either elect or reject von der Leyen in the crucial vote.
