West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu has described ragging in higher educational institutions as a 'disease' that should be eradicated through the active engagement of all stakeholders.
Speaking to reporters at an event at Scottish Church College, Basu stressed the importance of sensitizing both senior and junior students about the problem. 'While colleges and universities have zero tolerance towards the menace of ragging, students must also be sensitized about the issue. I am calling upon senior students to love their juniors. At the same time, I must ask the junior students to respect and love their seniors,' he stated.
Basu's comments come ahead of the commencement of first-year classes in state colleges on August 7. Addressing last year's tragic incident at Jadavpur University, where a first-year student died due to ragging, Basu noted that the university has taken several steps and kept him updated on the measures.
