The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has initiated a B.Sc. programme in Mathematics with the goal of producing at least 500 Maths teachers annually.

IIT-M has secured the first rank in the 'overall' category for the sixth year and in 'engineering' for the ninth year in a row as per the National Institutional Ranks Framework (NIRF) released by the Union Ministry of Education. Additionally, the institute ranked second in the Research Institution category.

Expressing gratitude to 11,000 students and faculty members for achieving this feat, IIT-M Director V Kamakoti said the ranking was based on various criteria including the percentage of graduates and Ph.D.s annually, and notable diversity with 30% student and gender equality.

Kamakoti acknowledged support from students, staff, alumni, state and central governments, and various ministries, reinforcing the institute's commitment to the nation's educational needs.

The past two years witnessed IIT-M focusing on advanced medical sciences, AI, and data analytics courses. Initiatives like inducting national sports champions under the sports excellence campaign also contributed to securing high ranks.

Kamakoti mentioned plans to introduce additional courses in Mathematics and B.Ed., aiming to produce 500 teachers per year, and extended congratulations to Anna University for its top state ranking. In response to a query on the South Africa campus, he suggested NIRF consider 'country-specific' ranking lists.
