Opposition members on Wednesday voiced concerns over the autonomy of the proposed 'Tribhuvan Sahkari University' in Gujarat, arguing that the BJP-led government favors centralization over independence. The debate arose during the presentation of the university bill by Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha.
The bill aims to elevate the Institute of Rural Management in Anand, Gujarat to university status, deeming it an institution of national importance. During discussions, TMC MP Saugata Roy expressed skepticism about the government's commitment to autonomy, suggesting the BJP prioritizes centralized power.
Amid the contentious debate, support was also voiced. Congress member Ganiben Thakor highlighted the prestige the university would bring to Gujarat, while BJP MP Mitesh Patel emphasized the region's historical contributions to the cooperative movement, underscoring the university's potential role in fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a self-reliant India.
