AI's Role in the Rise of Cyberattacks: A Looming Threat to UK Businesses
The increasing sophistication of AI will lead to more frequent and intense cyberattacks on UK entities, warns minister Pat McFadden. Recent attacks on major retailers highlight the need for robust cyber defenses. The UK government plans to bolster cybersecurity measures through new strategies and legislation.

The emergence of artificial intelligence is expected to escalate both the frequency and intensity of cyberattacks on Britain, according to senior minister Pat McFadden. An alarming surge in attacks has already impacted British companies, costing millions and causing prolonged disruptions.
Major retailers, including Marks & Spencer and the Co-op Group, have reported significant breaches in recent weeks. Despite remaining tight-lipped about specifics, the impact, particularly on services like M&S's online clothing orders, is evident.
Speaking at the CyberUK 2025 conference, McFadden emphasized the urgency for enhanced cybersecurity measures. With nearly 2,000 attacks reported last year, the government is set to unveil a new strategy and legislative reforms aimed at strengthening cyber defenses across the board.
