Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata has announced the discontinuation of its one-year postgraduate diploma course in Mass Communication, citing a poor response from prospective students. An official revealed the decision on Monday, noting that only 60 applicants applied this year.

After a rigorous screening process, the number of selected candidates would have been even lower, according to the official. 'With such low numbers, it is not feasible to continue the course,' the official stated, adding that the university will be refunding the Rs 100 application fee to each applicant.

The diploma program had been a part of the Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension since 1989. However, a faculty member highlighted that interest in the diploma has waned since the introduction of a two-year MA in Journalism and Mass Communication at the university.
