Sudan's Darfur Region Faces Severe Famine Amid Blockades
Malnourished children in Sudan's Darfur are at high risk due to blockades by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. These blockades prevent delivery of essential medical supplies and therapeutic food. Conflict between the RSF and Sudanese military has pushed millions into starvation and created a major displacement crisis.
Malnourished children in Sudan's Darfur region are facing starvation risks as a paramilitary blockade hinders malnutrition treatment, an aid group revealed Sunday.
Doctors Without Borders reported that the Rapid Support Forces have obstructed trucks carrying therapeutic food and medical supplies to al-Fasher city and Zamzam camp, where famine was confirmed last week.
The conflict between the RSF and Sudanese military has killed thousands and created the world's largest displacement crisis, with over 10 million people forced to flee their homes. International experts confirmed that starvation in Zamzam has escalated into full famine, affecting up to 600,000 people.
Doctors Without Borders warned that the overcrowded malnutrition ward in Zamzam camp has a 126% bed occupancy rate, and medicine stocks are critically low.
They stated that the RSF blockade in Kabkabiya has continued for over a month, forcing rationing of therapeutic food, putting thousands of children's lives at risk.
UN Coordinator Clementine Nkweta-Salami urged for a cease-fire to allow for safe humanitarian access and increased financial support to combat the large-scale famine threatening over half of Sudan's population.
