The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention for a central law to address violence against healthcare workers. This request comes in light of the recent alleged rape and murder of a medical professional at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and the subsequent vandalism of the facility.
The IMA, which is observing a 24-hour withdrawal of non-emergency services nationwide, emphasized the necessity for hospitals to be declared safe zones with mandatory security protocols similar to those at airports. The organization highlighted the need for CCTV cameras and security personnel to safeguard hospital premises.
Furthermore, the IMA urged for the incorporation of 2020 amendments from the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 into the 2019 Draft Bill to strengthen current state legislations. It also called for a thorough investigation of the recent crime and compensation for the victim's family. The association stressed that women in the healthcare sector are particularly vulnerable, and stringent safety measures must be adopted to protect them.
