Operalia, the world-renowned opera competition created by Plácido Domingo, is set to make its inaugural appearance in India, marking its debut in South Asia. The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai will host the 31st edition this September.
From September 15th to 21st, the NCPA will welcome 32 competitors from 18 countries. These finalists will be accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of India under the baton of Maestro Domingo, competing for top honors at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre. Renowned figures from some of the world's most prestigious opera houses will judge the competition.
'The fact that the NCPA is the chosen venue highlights its reputation and ability to host such major events,' said Khushroo N. Suntook, Chairman of NCPA. Mumbai's operatic tradition is further emphasized by regular Opera Galas and exclusive screenings in collaboration with The Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
With the support of the Rolex Perpetual Arts Initiative, this edition of Operalia aims to inspire more Indian musicians to pursue opera, potentially marking a significant moment in India's cultural history.
