Saudi Arabia has strengthened its branding efforts with Atlético Madrid by acquiring the naming rights to Atlético's stadium for nine years. This move cements a burgeoning relationship, as the club has already been sponsored by the Saudi state-owned Riyadh Air since last season.
Renowned as the Wanda Metropolitano in 2017 and later the Civitas Metropolitano, the stadium will now bear the name Riyadh Air Metropolitano through 2033. While the financial specifics remain undisclosed, this agreement marks the Saudi Arabian entity as the club's leading sponsor.
This strategy aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 initiative, aiming to modernize the nation and diversify its economy. Despite the positive strides in sports diplomacy, the kingdom faces criticism over alleged human rights abuses, even as it seeks to host the 2034 World Cup.
