On Saturday, the world of dance mourned the loss of one of its stalwarts, Mayadhar Raut, who passed away at his Delhi residence at age 92. Known as the 'Father of Odissi Dance', Raut made monumental contributions to the art form, steering its revival during the 1950s.

Born on July 6, 1933, in Odisha, Raut embarked on his dance journey early, mastering the 'Gotipua' dance traditionally considered the precursor to classical Odissi. His relentless efforts were pivotal in securing Odissi's status as a shastra-based classical dance. Raut was instrumental in establishing the first Odissi institute in India and played a critical role in the art form's codification.

Throughout his career, Raut introduced groundbreaking theories and choreographies, earning him numerous accolades including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He is survived by his daughter, Madhumita Raut, and sons, while his legacy continues to inspire generations of dancers.
