Controversy Erupts Over Satrikh Fair Honoring Historical Figure
Local leaders and activists demand a ban on the Satrikh fair celebrating Syed Salar Sahu Gazi, citing historical controversy over his association with Mahmud of Ghazni. The fair, linked to an invader's legacy, faces scrutiny and calls for prohibition akin to actions taken against a similar event in Sambhal.

In Barabanki, a contentious debate has risen around the annual Syed Salar Sahu Gazi fair held in Satrikh, with local BJP leaders, social activists, and lawyers urging the authorities to ban it. Critics argue that Gazi, a historical figure associated with the 11th-century invader Mahmud of Ghazni, should not be celebrated.
The ongoing controversy follows a recent prohibition of a similar event in Sambhal, where authorities denied permission for the 'Neja Mela.' Anoop Kumar Yadav of BJP's Legal Cell stated that traditions based on misleading historical facts should be dismissed. He emphasized that the administration should follow the precedent set in Sambhal.
Additional voices like Ashutosh Awasthi, BJP Kisan Morcha district president, claimed the fair is held on sacred Hindu land. Local representatives are now poised to appeal to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to halt the Satrikh fair following the Sambhal model.
