Historian Swapna Liddle has called on the media to shift its focus from 'heritage in danger' narratives to highlighting the potential of often-overlooked heritage sites in Old Delhi.
In a discussion at the India International Centre titled 'Lesser Known Heritage: The Role of Media', Liddle emphasized the issue of ongoing demolition of historic buildings in Old Delhi. Among the 700 listed heritage buildings, many are neglected or destroyed, catering to the public's preference for picturesque sites. She highlighted the media's role in reimagining these places for the public, demonstrating heritage's potential as an asset in urban development, particularly in historically rich areas like Shahjahanabad.
Using historical artworks juxtaposed with present-day images, Liddle showcased the neglect of sites like the Town Hall and Bhagirath Palace. These examples underline the need for media to advocate for preserving heritage sites by demonstrating their potential economic benefits, as seen in places like Venice, Goa, and Pondicherry. The discussion featured insights from Delhi Urban Art Commission's Ajit Pai, Prasar Bharati's K Satish Nambudiripad, and IIC Director KN Shrivastava.
