The Jammu and Kashmir government has taken a decisive step against literature it deems harmful, ordering the forfeiture of 25 books written by acclaimed authors. This action is aimed at curbing the spread of narratives that allegedly glorify terrorism and secessionism in the region.
An official order from the Home Department highlighted intelligence and investigations indicating these publications' impact in fueling violence among the youth. According to the order, the books disguise themselves as historical or political commentary while promoting false narratives.
Such literature is accused of distorting facts and promoting a culture of grievance and victimhood. The imposition of forfeiture is part of a broader move to address the radicalization of young people in Jammu and Kashmir, citing sections from the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 to justify the legal move.
