Christopher Nolan's Journey: From 'Troy' to 'The Odyssey'

Christopher Nolan, initially intended to direct the 2004 epic 'Troy', chose to explore Homer’s Greek epic over the years. Despite Warner Bros. giving 'Troy' to Wolfgang Petersen, Nolan went on to direct 'Batman Begins' and later, the 2023 film 'Oppenheimer'. 'The Odyssey' is set for a 2026 release.

Twenty years prior to embarking on 'The Odyssey', filmmaker Christopher Nolan was considered for directing the 2004 epic 'Troy'. However, the project, initially overseen by director Wolfgang Petersen, was reclaimed by Petersen following conflicts with Warner Bros. regarding a superhero movie.

Nolan expressed that his fascination with exploring Homer's world has endured for many years, particularly in reimagining iconic elements like the Trojan horse. This enduring interest suggests that the classic epic has lingered in the Oscar-winning director's intentions for a long time.

Warner Bros. ultimately passed the 'Troy' project back to Petersen and instead offered Nolan 'Batman Begins', which he accepted. Wolfgang Petersen's 'Troy' was released with stars including Brad Pitt. Nolan's recent projects include directing 'Oppenheimer', with 'The Odyssey' scheduled for a 2026 release.
