Revitalizing Indian Pilgrimage Sites: PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan Initiatives Unveiled

The Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) scheme, launched in 2015, has seen significant progress with 54 projects sanctioned across 28 states and UTs in India. The government revealed an investment of Rs 1,726.74 crore in rejuvenating tourism infrastructure at key pilgrimage sites, aiming to improve amenities and visitor experiences.
According to Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the initiative plays a vital role in sustainable and inclusive development. It also aids in employment generation while boosting local skills and capacities. Meanwhile, the Swadesh Darshan scheme, revamped as Swadesh Darshan 2.0, focuses on sustainable tourism, with 53 projects approved at Rs 2,208.27 crore.
Under both schemes, notable progress has been made, with over 75 Swadesh Darshan projects and 32 PRASHAD projects physically completed. These efforts reflect a strategic push to enhance tourism's role in India's economic and social fabric.
