The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has raised alarms over Netflix's proposal to acquire Warner Bros Discovery, citing potential threats to the country's film industry. The MAI indicated this move could directly compete against and undermine India's theatrical and broader film economy.
Netflix recently announced a $72 billion deal with Warner Bros Discovery, intending to buy its studio and streaming assets, a step MAI describes as economically threatening. The association emphasized Warner Bros' significant role in India's cinematic landscape through successful title releases.
MAI President Kamal Gianchandani stated that the acquisition could limit film diversity and economic vitality in cinemas, arguing that Netflix's history of deprioritizing theatrical releases poses a dual threat to high-quality content availability and cinema attendance in India.
