Miraculous Survival: Sherpa Guide's Week on Everest without Food or Oxygen
Dawa Sherpa, a 52-year-old Nepali guide, was remarkably rescued after surviving around a week on Mount Everest without food or oxygen. Separated from his Polish client during their descent, Dawa endured harsh conditions near the Khumbu Icefall. He was located and safely brought down after the climbing season ended.
A Nepali Sherpa guide has made an extraordinary escape from certain death, surviving without sustenance and supplemental oxygen on the steep slopes of Mount Everest. Dawa Sherpa, aged 52, went missing between Camp III and Camp IV while returning with a Polish climber after an unsuccessful summit attempt.
Last seen on May 29, Sherpa's separation from his client remains unclear. While his client made it back to base camp, Dawa survived close to a week in severe conditions before being rescued by Lama Kazi Sherpa and his team from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee during a post-season cleanup operation.
The rescue team located Dawa near the Khumbu Icefall, where even fixed ladders had been removed for the season. Rushed to a hospital for treatment of frostbite and other complications, Dawa's family expressed relief at his recovery. This season on Everest saw over 1,000 ascents but was not without tragedy, as five climbers and guides perished.
