The National Commission for Women (NCW) demands action after a controversial stand-up comedy show in Gurugram allegedly glorifies sexual coercion. NCW schedules a hearing and seeks detailed reports on actions taken, underscoring the importance of respecting women's dignity and consent.
The National Commission for Women has initiated a review following media reports and a viral video that allegedly shows inappropriate comments about sexual coercion at a stand-up comedy show in Gurugram, Haryana. The comments were reportedly made in public and received applause, prompting NCW to issue hearing notices to comedians Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra. A hearing is set for June 22 at 4:00 PM.
In a press note, NCW expressed serious concerns about the video's content and the trivialization of actions undermining women's consent and dignity. The commission emphasized the potential harmful impact on women's safety and societal attitudes towards gender-based violence. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has approached Haryana's Director General of Police to seek immediate and strict action, requesting a detailed report within a week.
The commission has asked for updates on any FIRs registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other laws, as well as actions against those involved. They are also investigating the authentication of the viral video and the roles of the organizers and performers. NCW stressed the importance of preventing entertainment platforms from promoting conduct violating women's dignity. They condemned the incident, emphasizing that consent is non-negotiable and that humor should not come at the expense of women's rights and safety.
