The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up to induct 114 multirole fighter jets over the next four to five years, as confirmed by defence sources. This strategic move comes after a high-level committee, led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, presented its findings to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, acknowledging the urgent need for these aircraft to enhance the IAF's combat capabilities.
According to sources, the IAF anticipates the retirement of 10 fighter aircraft squadrons by 2037, necessitating the acquisition of modern jets to replenish and expand fleet strength. Targeting a total of 60 fighter squadrons by 2047, the induction of Multirole Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) jets within the coming decade is deemed crucial for strategic readiness, especially in the context of potential two-front conflicts.
As older fleets like the Jaguar, Mirage-2000, and MiG-29 exit service by 2035, the IAF's acquisition strategy includes evaluating aircraft such as the Rafale, Gripen, Eurofighter Typhoon, MiG-35, and F-16 for the global tender. The new addition to the competition is Boeing's F-15 Strike Eagle, while the IAF plans limited trials to expedite the tender process. Despite setbacks due to supply chain disruptions and the slow rollout of indigenous LCA variants, the IAF's ongoing induction of 36 Rafale jets provides a temporary combat advantage. (ANI)
