BJP leader C N Ashwath Narayan has raised serious allegations of misconduct in the smart meter tender process conducted by BESCOM and other Electricity Supply Companies in Karnataka. Accusations of favoritism and misappropriation involving Rs 15,568 crore have been levelled against the Congress-led government.
Narayan criticized the lack of transparency and adherence to the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission rules, pointing out discrepancies in tender values and procedures. He emphasized that the installation of smart meters as a mandate is inconsistent with existing regulations.
The former Deputy Chief Minister highlighted that the tender process failed to follow the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements Act, while a blacklisted company was considered for the contract. The state's government has been urged to provide clarity amidst allegations reminiscent of previous scams in other states.
