Landslide Chaos: Hydro-electric Project Site Hit in Uttarakhand

A landslide at the THDC's Vinshnugad Hydro-electricity project in Uttarakhand injured twelve labourers. The site has been temporarily shut down for safety. Emergency services were dispatched following the incident, which occurred while 300 workers were on-site. THDC is constructing a barrage for energy generation using Alaknanda river water.

Twelve labourers sustained injuries after a landslide hit the THDC's Vinshnugad Hydro-electricity project site near Helang in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Saturday. District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari reported that some 300 labourers were on-site when rocks started descending from a hill, causing chaos.

Emergency response teams promptly arrived, with eight workers suffering minor injuries and four seriously hurt. One worker suffered a leg fracture, while another requires a spinal MRI evaluation.

In light of the incident, construction has been paused pending a safety review. The THDC is charged with harnessing Alaknanda river water, previously affected by a 2021 flood, to power turbines at Pipalkoti.
