The final rites for Shibu Soren, a revered tribal leader and founder of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), are to be performed in his native Nimra village following his passing in Delhi. Crowds gathered at his Ranchi residence to honor the former Jharkhand Chief Minister and JMM patriarch.

Soren passed on August 4 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, overcoming a painful illness. Born January 11, 1944, in Nemra, his modest Santhal Adivasi farming upbringing fueled his lifelong fight for Adivasi rights and dignity. His resolve was sharpened early by the murder of his father by local landlords.

A political stalwart, Soren's journey spanned over 40 years. He co-founded JMM in 1972, advocating for a separate tribal state, and served thrice as Jharkhand Chief Minister. In national politics, he was elected to Lok Sabha eight times, Rajya Sabha thrice, and served as Coal Minister in the UPA government.

Soren's reputation soared in the 1970s through dynamic campaigns against oppressive landlords, becoming a tribal rights icon. He was central to the Jharkhand Statehood Movement, which culminated in the state's creation in 2000.

Despite legal entanglements, including convictions later overturned, Soren's influence endured. He entrusted JMM's leadership to his son, Hemant Soren, in 2025. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi lauded him as a 'strong tribal voice' with lasting contributions to Jharkhand's formation.
