In an unprecedented move, Karnataka has taken a significant step towards safeguarding the interests of gig workers by introducing a comprehensive welfare bill. Labour Minister Santosh Lad presented the bill on Tuesday during the legislative assembly session, emphasizing that those engaged in digital platforms qualify as gig workers, spanning various sectors such as food delivery, e-market, and health services.

The bill, set to encompass 23.5 million workers nationwide according to NITI Aayog, targets approximately 4 lakh gig workers in Karnataka, including those driving two-wheelers, rickshaws, and cars. It seeks to implement transparency and hold digital platform operators accountable through automatic monitoring systems while ensuring protections such as a welfare board, dispute resolution, and a dedicated welfare fund.

Addressing urban challenges like traffic congestion and pollution, which affect the health of gig workers, the state government has pledged health insurance coverage of up to ₹2 lakh. Additionally, the legislation mandates the registration of gig workers and platforms, promising income security and improved working conditions. The bill received unanimous support from both ruling and opposition party members, passing with a voice vote.
