In a recent statement, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him that India would cease purchasing Russian oil, warning of substantial tariffs if otherwise. However, India's foreign ministry has denied any recent conversations on the matter.

The purchase of Russian oil has been a major sticking point in ongoing trade negotiations between India and the U.S., with the White House claiming such purchases financially support Russia's military activities in Ukraine. India, in response, has been acquiring Russian oil at discounted rates amid sanctions imposed by Western nations against Moscow following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

A government official from India described the trade discussions with the U.S. as amicable. Despite this, India looks to protect its consumer interests amid these negotiations, as Russian oil imports are estimated to rise by 20% this month.
