TotalEnergies Accused of Complicity in Mozambique War Crimes
A human rights nonprofit has accused TotalEnergies of complicity in war crimes in Mozambique, filing a complaint with French prosecutors. The oil giant is alleged to have ties to acts of torture by Mozambican soldiers at its gas project site, which it denies. The investigation continues.
TotalEnergies, the French oil giant, is facing serious allegations from a European human rights nonprofit, which has filed a criminal complaint accusing the corporation of complicity in war crimes and torture in Mozambique.
The case, submitted to French prosecutors, ties TotalEnergies to alleged acts of abuse by government soldiers operating on land evacuated by the company during 2021, under a security agreement. TotalEnergies has consistently denied any wrongdoing and was unaware of these allegations at the time.
The complaint adds to a growing scrutiny of corporate activities in conflict zones. Meanwhile, TotalEnergies prepares to resume its Mozambican LNG project cautiously, as investigations into past events remain unresolved.
