Justice Surya Kant has been sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, succeeding Justice BR Gavai. The oath ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, was administered by President Murmu, marking the start of Justice Kant's approximately 15-month tenure.

Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Kant began his legal career in 1984 and moved to Chandigarh in 1985 to practice in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Recognized for his expertise in constitutional, service, and civil law, he represented numerous institutions and was the youngest Advocate General of Haryana in 2000. He was appointed a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004, and a Supreme Court judge in 2019.

Educated at Government Post Graduate College and Maharishi Dayanand University, Justice Kant aims to address the pressing issue of case backlogs during his tenure. Emphasizing mediation as a crucial tool, he discussed his strategies in a meeting with legal journalists in Delhi. His inauguration attracted an international delegation, including dignitaries from countries like Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
