Government Seeks Parliament's Nod for Rs 41,455 Crore Extra Spend

The government on Monday requested Parliament's approval for an additional net expenditure of Rs 41,455 crore in the current fiscal year, primarily aimed at fertiliser and petroleum subsidies.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the first batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2025-26 in the Lok Sabha. This seeks a total gross additional expenditure of Rs 1.32 lakh crore.
Of the total, Rs 18,525 crore is earmarked for fertiliser subsidies, and Rs 9,500 crore for LPG subsidies under the Petroleum Ministry. Additional amounts include Rs 1,304 crore for higher education and Rs 225 crore for commerce, along with Rs 1,200 crore for external affairs and Rs 2,500 crore for home ministry needs.
