Energy consumption patterns in the national capital, Delhi, have seen significant shifts over the past five years, highlighting a considerable increase in domestic users and a marked decline in industrial consumers, as detailed in the recently released Delhi Statistical Handbook 2025 by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics.
According to the data, domestic power consumption skyrocketed from 16,253 million units (MU) in 2019-20 to 19,817 MU in 2024-25, marking a 21 percent increase. Meanwhile, the number of domestic power consumers grew from over 50 lakh to 62 lakh in this period. Conversely, industrial power consumption fell sharply by more than 22 percent.
The data also points to a significant transition in cooking energy preferences, with an 88 percent increase in piped natural gas (PNG) connections and a concurrent decline in LPG cylinder consumption. This shift underlines a broader trend towards more sustainable energy sources.
