In the wake of farmer Sukhwant Singh's tragic suicide, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and prominent Congress figure Harish Rawat has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, dismissing the current Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe as inadequate. Rawat argues that Singh's death, despite appearing as suicide, was driven by coercive circumstances, akin to murder, warranting Singh's recognition as a martyr.

Rawat emphasized that Singh had identified those he held responsible for his distress in a pre-suicide statement, insisting on filing an FIR and suspending officials prior to CBI intervention. The SIT has already commenced its investigation, scrutinizing evidence at ITI Police Station, as confirmed by Uttarakhand Police Headquarters.

The investigation involves reviewing a post-mortem report and analyzing Singh's mobile phone and firearm. The SIT's technical team is probing an email from Singh listing allegations against local figures and police officers. Concurrently, a magisterial inquiry is underway. Simultaneously, 12 police personnel linked to the case have been suspended, and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has pledged a thorough investigation, vowing no leniency for those accountable.
