Himachal Pradesh CM Urges Apple Import Ban During Local Harvest

In a significant move aimed at protecting local apple farmers, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has urged the Central Government to impose a ban on apple imports during the state's harvest season, from July to November.
During a meeting with Union Minister for Commerce and Industries Piyush Goyal in New Delhi, CM Sukhu advocated for raising the import duty to 100 percent during the off-season to discourage unwanted influx. Highlighting the concerns of 2.5 lakh apple farmers in this crucial sector that contributes significantly to Himachal Pradesh's economy, he emphasized the detrimental impact of free trade agreements.
Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister, Ram Subhah Singh, and Secretary Rakesh Kanwar attended the meeting, underscoring the urgency of addressing the rising import volumes under these agreements. Meanwhile, BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda also expressed commitment to the state's development, highlighting ongoing support from the Central Government.
