The Similipal Tiger Reserve, renowned for its rare pseudo-melanistic tigers, faces a crisis as authorities strive to combat poaching. A recent major crackdown resulted in 12 arrests linked to the seizure of a black tiger skin, yet the main suspect remains elusive, casting doubt on the effectiveness of a significant Rs. 100 crore budget aimed at the reserve's protection.

In a shocking turn of events, the Baripada Forest Division of Odisha's Mayurbhanj district captured the prized skin of an adult melanistic tiger, deemed a unique genetic variant. Estimated to host about 13 such tigers, Similipal is the world's only known wild habitat for these creatures. The recent killing signifies a severe setback for conservation.

With advanced AI-based surveillance systems in place, questions arise regarding systemic failures in protection measures. Despite substantial funding from both the National Tiger Conservation Authority and the Odisha government, poaching incidents persist, endangering these tigers at an alarming rate, urging a deeper examination of accountability and enforcement strategies.
