In a crucial political development in Assam, caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned on Wednesday, setting the stage for the formation of a new cabinet by the BJP. This comes after a landmark election victory for the party in the state.
BJP National President Nitin Nabin made a strategic move by appointing JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini as central observers. Their task will be to manage the selection process for the new Chief Minister. Sarma announced these appointments to the media, noting that the legislative party will decide the next leadership during a crucial meeting. The oath-taking ceremony is anticipated after May 11, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited to the event.
Sarma submitted his resignation to Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who accepted it, thus dissolving the current assembly term. However, the Governor has requested Sarma to serve as the state's caretaker until a new government is established. The BJP, securing a hat-trick win, alongside its allies, bagged a total of 102 seats, reflecting robust public confidence and a solid mandate for the NDA-led government.
