In a critical stance against the Great Nicobar Project, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted severe potential ecological consequences during his recent visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Through a video on YouTube, Gandhi expressed his apprehension about the large-scale destruction of the islands' natural beauty and biodiversity.
Gandhi detailed his observations, noting pristine forests and coral ecosystems that could be irrevocably lost. He engaged with local residents and tribal communities, voicing their concerns over potential displacement and loss of traditional lands. Gandhi emphasized that the development scale resembles four times the size of New Delhi, threatening valuable ecological resources.
Moreover, Gandhi criticized the government for projecting the project as a defense initiative, arguing it lacks proper justification since a similar project is underway in Kerala. He asserted the government's actions would lead to extensive environmental disruptions for economic interests, urging a focus on sustainable development.
