In a significant development for Kolkata's urban transport, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has revealed plans to introduce 60 new-generation trains to the city's metro system over the next four to five years. The announcement came after a detailed review meeting with West Bengal's top political figures, including the Chief Minister.
During his visit, Vaishnaw emphasized that the modernization of Kolkata Metro is part of a broader strategy to enhance urban mobility. He expressed optimism that as these projects progress, they will significantly improve the city's transit systems. "A lot of efforts have been made to advance mobility in Kolkata city," he stated.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Adhikari announced an ambitious initiative to connect Kolkata via a Water Metro system, making it the 18th city in India to embrace this transport method. The state government is set to invest Rs 22,700 crore in various maritime projects under the Sagarmala 2 programme, focusing on coastal and fishing infrastructure.
