Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an ambitious plan on Monday to expand India's rail network by introducing 3,000 new regular train services over the next five years. This move, part of a greater strategy to increase capacity for middle and lower-middle-class passengers, follows the addition of 2,000 services in the post-COVID era.

Vaishnaw emphasized the transformation in railway investment since 2014, contrasting current funding with the limited allocations of the previous 60-70 years. A key milestone was the 2016 merger of the railway and general budgets, enabling a surge in funding from ₹35,000 crore to ₹2,72,000 crore, thanks to prioritization by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.

The government has been focusing on infrastructure expansion, laying 36,000 km of new railway tracks. The Minister also noted the progress of the country's inaugural bullet train project, advancing at a rate of 15 km per month. Key corridors, including Surat to Bilimora, are on track for an August 2027 launch, further enhancing India's transportation landscape.
