The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Mohali has successfully executed Punjab's maiden liver transplant at a public facility, marking a historic moment in the state's medical history, according to Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh.
This groundbreaking surgery—carried out on November 27—was a lifesaving feat, achieved at a fraction of the cost in private healthcare settings. The operation equated to Rs 12 lakh compared to Rs 45-50 lakh typically charged by private hospitals. The recipient is now recovering and is expected to be discharged shortly.
The government's commitment to strengthening public healthcare continues as it plans to expand ILBS with a 175-bed patient care block and state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities. Additionally, the Punjab government is preparing to offer Rs 10 lakh cashless treatments under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojna, launching in January.
