Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) emphasized on Friday that the future of Taiwan should not depend on the goodwill of Chinese leaders, according to Taiwan News. MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng highlighted the crux of the crisis, pointing to China's refusal to recognize Taiwan's objective existence.
Chiu criticized China's propaganda and threats as the primary cause of uncertainty across the Taiwan Strait. He supported President Lai Ching-te's policy of maintaining the status quo to ensure regional peace and stability. Citing Radio Taiwan International, Chiu reiterated Taiwan's constitutional stance as a sovereign entity.
Chiu also urged Taiwanese travelers to exercise caution when visiting China, Hong Kong, or Macau, and to register on the MAC website for assistance. This comes after China threatened capital punishment for supporters of Taiwan's independence, prompting Taiwan to raise its travel advisory from yellow to orange.
On Thursday, Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA) monitored four China Coast Guard vessels that entered Taiwan-controlled waters near Kinmen County. The CGA reported that the vessels intruded into restricted waters from various points at 7 a.m. local time, marking the 31st intrusion in 2024.
