Saudi Arabia has condemned the killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, calling it a 'blatant violation' of Iran's sovereignty. Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed al-Khereiji stated that Saudi Arabia rejects interference in the internal affairs of countries. This declaration was made during an extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Saudi Arabia.
Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of the attack on Haniyeh on July 31, though Israel has not issued any statements regarding the incident. The OIC attributed the act to Israel, terming it a 'serious infringement' of Iran's sovereignty. Iran has vowed to retaliate, escalating tensions in the region.
Gambia's Foreign Minister, Mamadou Tangara, highlighted the potential for regional conflict due to Haniyeh's killing and ongoing violence in Gaza. He emphasized the need for durable peace and international cooperation to address humanitarian concerns and promote stability. Amid escalating tensions, Iran has threatened severe retaliation against Israel, with Hamas's Gaza chief, Yahya Sinwar, replacing the slain leader.
