Cyprus Grapples with Antisemitic Graffiti Amid Political Tensions

The Republic of Cyprus has doubled down on its stance against antisemitic graffiti, emphasized by the Interior Minister's directive to municipalities to obliterate such hate speech from public spaces. This follows concerns raised by Israel regarding derogatory slogans in Cyprus targeting Israelis.
The decision has become a political flashpoint, particularly involving the opposition AKEL party. After receiving a complaint from Israel, AKEL reacted fiercely, refuting foreign interventions and attacking the government's alignment with Israeli interests. The government's conservative allies, however, criticized AKEL's response, questioning its consistency and motives.
Tensions are further amplified by Cyprus's impending parliamentary elections, with AKEL, whose popularity has waned, reigniting its Palestinian advocacy. The party's focus on the Palestinian issue, amid election campaigning, underscores the divisive political climate shaping Cyprus's future trajectory.
