Petrobras, Brazil's state-run energy behemoth, has recommenced operations at the Bahia Fertilizer Plant in Camacari, marking a significant move in curbing the country's dependence on imported nitrogen fertilizers. The resumption of urea production was underscored during a visit by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Petrobras President Magda Chambriard, and other dignitaries, reported Brasil 247.

During a press conference in Salvador, Chambriard emphasized that this reopening is integral to Petrobras' strategic plan through 2030, aimed at bolstering domestic fertilizer manufacturing and leveraging natural gas in industrial settings. The Bahia plant, dormant since 2019, briefly functioned under a private lease before ceasing operations in 2023. This revitalization underscores Petrobras' dedication to rejuvenating Brazil's fertilizer industry, driven by reduced natural gas costs and viable long-term investments, according to Brasil 247.

With an investment of approximately BRL 100 million, the reactivation of the plant has generated around 3,600 jobs and is now producing 1,300 tons of urea daily, meeting about 5% of Brazil's nitrogen fertilizer demand. The plant's output is set to aid vital agricultural sectors like corn, sugarcane, coffee, wheat, and cotton, alongside livestock feed production.

Chambriard disclosed that Petrobras is reviving additional fertilizer initiatives, including Fafen Sergipe, Fafen Ansa, and the Nitrogen Fertilizer Unit 3 in Mato Grosso do Sul. Anticipated to be fully operational by 2028, these efforts aim to fulfill nearly 35% of Brazil's domestic nitrogen fertilizer requirements, diminishing reliance on imports. Additionally, Petrobras has outlined extensive investments totaling USD 3.5 billion for energy projects, including oil and gas exploration in Bahia, which are expected to catalyze job creation and bolster the energy sector.
