Tibetan Monk's Repeated Detention Sparks Concerns Over Religious Repression
A Tibetan monk from Labrang Tashikhyil Monastery was detained by Chinese authorities, raising concerns over religious freedom in Tibet. This follows his previous arbitrary detention, and authorities have provided no information on his status. Rights groups highlight a pattern of intimidation in Tibetan regions.
A Tibetan monk from eastern Tibet has been detained for a second time by Chinese authorities, prompting renewed apprehension over China's suppression of religious freedom and dissent in Tibet, according to reports by Tibet Watch and cited by Phayul. Jamyang Tashi, a monk from Labrang Tashikhyil Monastery in Amdo, was taken into custody by police in Sangchu County in early February.
Reports indicate that the latest detention of Jamyang occurred just two months after his release from a previous six-month period of arbitrary detention. Chinese authorities have yet to disclose the reasons behind his latest apprehension and have withheld information regarding his current location or state, according to Tibet Watch.
Jamyang's previous detention was based on allegations of communicating with exiled Tibetans, an accusation often made by Chinese authorities against Tibetan monks and civilians suspected of engaging with exile communities. The lack of information about his latest detention has heightened concerns, especially as his family has received no official details about his case. Authorities have reportedly warned relatives not to inquire, raising fears for his safety. Efforts to verify Jamyang's situation independently have been thwarted by intimidation and fears of retaliation against family members.
Jamyang was initially detained alongside fellow monk Jigme Sangpo, affiliated with the same monastery, and whose whereabouts are also unknown. Rights groups argue that these disappearances point to a broader pattern of intimidation and enforced secrecy imposed by Chinese authorities in Tibetan regions. Labrang Tashikhyil Monastery, a prominent center of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, has been under heightened surveillance and scrutiny due to its religious influence and cultural significance in the Amdo region, as reported by Phayul.
